Turtles and Whales at Pongara National Park

The citizens of Libreville are blessed to be so close to so many beautiful national parks with deep forests and romantic beaches. Give an extra touch to your travel in Gabon or take a break from the city life and go on a romantic getaway for a few days on the beach of Pongara National Park.
But this is not just some beach holiday close to the city as besides the unspoilt coast the park also offers plenty of forest and mangrove harboring many kinds of animals. It’s also the perfect base to go watch turtles and go whale watching.

This amazing wilderness lies just outside of Libreville and apart from a few lodges, is relatively untouched. It’s almost 100.000 hectares big and has a wide variety of plants. We can find mangrove forest, swamp forest, riverine forest and seasonally inundated forest and a small savannah, all guarded by a sandy coastline.

It’s hard to believe that a national park so close to a capital is actually full of wildlife. We can find mammals such as elephants, gorillas, monkeys, buffaloes, duikers and even chimpanzees. The beaches are also visited by leatherback sea turtles for breeding. Needless to say the park is also a sanctuary for tons of bird species.

We have two different formulas, depending on the season when you’re coming, although these can never be 100 percent accurate as the activities depend on the migratory times of the animals.

Rain Season (Mid October – May): This season is best for turtles. From November to February you can do the night walk with the turtles and from December to April you can see the turtles hatch and you will visit the turtle research center. We offer marine excursions, safari rides and walks, kayaking and night walks to see pottos and galagos. Don’t forget to relax at the beach as well!

Dry Season (May – Mid October): This period is best for whale watching, typically best from July until September. You will visit the turtle research center. We offer marine excursions, safari rides and walks, kayaking and night walks to see pottos and galagos. Don’t forget to relax at the beach as well!

On your day of arrival you will stay for one night at the Radisson in Libreville, which has the best standards and is also our most reliable partner. The day after we will pick you up in Libreville and transfer you by boat to the lodge. The journey takes less than one hour and will offer you spectacular views on Libreville’s skyline and on the coastline of the park. You will receive a welcome drink on your arrival and will be shown your room. You will have the opportunity to explore the beach and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon we’ll set up your activities followed by another excellent meal during night time under the stars.

During your stay you will either have turtle or whale watching activities, depending on the period, as well as safari rides and walks. During your stay at the park all meals are included. On your day of departure morning activities and lunch are available and you can leave the lodge during the afternoon. It’s also possible to arrange you an early morning boat if needed.

We offer 2 nights/3 nights/5 nights-packages. Contact us if you want to combine this package with another tour.
