On this trip we’ll take the plane to Franceville, from where we’ll visit the national wonders of Lékédi National Park and Batéké National Park. We will meet up in Libreville where we will take the plane together to Franceville. We will select a hotel in the city for our first night.
On the second day we will go to the Poubara Falls, located on the Ogooué River, south of Franceville. There is a liane-bridge over the river which consists of 2.400 lianes carefully twisted into a bridge. The bridge is 52 meter long and gives amazing views over the river. It was constructed in 1915 as the river was considered too dangerous to cross by canoe.
We will then continue our way as from tomorrow on we will stay in the Batéké Plateau for three days, where we will also camp. We ask you to provide your own camping material. The Batéké Plateau NP is roughly 2.000 square kilometers and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005. The park actually spans from Gabon to Congo-Brazzaville and the DRC and covers over 60.000 square km of land and is managed by the WCS. The park contains a lot of hills covered in grass and wooded savanna, pockets of forest and river valleys. We can find elephants, antelopes, chimpanzees, buffaloes, gorillas and many others. A single lion has also been reported on the Gabonese part, which is most likely related to its Congolese relatives. You will see a wild variety of landscapes during your travel such as forest, savanna, marshlands and of course countless hills!
We will use a combination of 4×4 driving, boat safari and also walking to see the park from different angles. It is possible to see elephants, buffalos, monkeys, antelopes and a large variety of birds. It’s possible to see gorillas as well, although this is not easy!
On our last full day we’ll go to visit the small, but charming Lékédi Park with 14.000 hectares of savanna, forest and rivers. It’s a haven for hundreds of local animals such as buffels, leopards, chimpanzees, mandrills and gorillas. We can also find a large variety of smaller mammals such as mongoose, crocodiles, turtles, varanes, porcupines, otters and squirrels and many more. The main goal of the park is to preserve the biodiversity and to rehabilitate primates such as gorilla and chimpanzee orphans. The park aims to help bringing awareness about the environment and boost ecotourism. We will then go back to Franceville and the following morning we’ll take the plane back to Libreville.
