The Gorillas of Moukalaba-Doudou And Coastal Escape In Mayumba

We have a great trip in which we offer the cheapest formula to go search for wildlife such as gorillas in Gabon (Moukalaba-Doudou). Next to gorillas (high chance, although never 100 pct guaranteed ofcourse), you can spot a lot of different wildlife on this trip such as buffaloes, elephants, genets, monkeys and others. If you come in the right season you can also add leatherback turtle hatching to your list when you visit the magnificent beaches of Mayumba.

Our tour starts in Libreville from where we will take a flight to Tchibanga. Though it’s possible to drive to Tchibanga, this will only take a lot of time and also be quite expensive. So, it’s important to plan this trip well and base it on the flight programme for flights between Libreville and Tchibanga.

From Tchibanga we will go to Moukalaba-Doudou and stay in the forest for a few nights and go track gorillas.

Moukalaba-Doudou National Park

The Moukalaba-Doudou National Park is around 5,000 km² or 502,805 hectares and is one of the last strongholds of Defassa waterbucks in Gabon. We can find several large mammals in the park like elephants, buffaloes, gorillas, chimpanzees, hippos and Nile crocodiles. There is also a large variety of amphibians next to a wide diversity of reptiles and birds.

Moukalaba-Doudou is an important park when it comes to protecting the local wildlife, especially for the protection of great apes such as gorillas and chimpanzees.
There are an estimated 4.700 gorillas in Moukalaba-Doudou.

Moukalaba-Doudou National Park is an integral part of the Mayombe massif and the great plains of Nyanga, made up of savannah in the east of the park. The Moukoulaba River is the eastern boundary of the park and the Nyanga River in the south, which’ river mouth is home to large populations of elephants. To the west, the park is bordered by the Rembo Bongo river and its connecting lakes

Mayumba National Park:

In the south of Gabon we find the smallest national park of Gabon: Mayumba National Park. Mayumba has a 60 km long coastline (1 km wide) and is an important habitat for leatherback turtles to breed and its waters are a safe haven for dolphins, sharks and humpback whales.

Mayumba National Park got its status in 2002 by president Bongo and comprises both ocean and a coastline of 1 km wide and 60 km long. The coast consists of white sandy beaches and lagoons where we can find several bird species and animals like chimpanzees, buffaloes, chimpanzees, gorillas, genets and elephants. Mayumba’s lagoons are connected with a network of canals and streams, mangroves, flooded forests and swamps which all together are important ecosystems home to animals such as hippos, manatees, crocodiles and many fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds.

Remember you are going to a national park. There is only very limited electricity at times in the camps and no running water. There is going to be a lot of walking so make sure you are fit enough and well-prepared (good clothing and shoes). Remember that wildlife is unpredictable and take enough distance from the animals and make sure you wear a mouth mask when you go visit the gorillas. We are not responsible for anything that might happen to you during this trip when encountering wildlife. It’s up to you to have good insurance.
