Gabon Two Week Glamping Safari at Nyanga Lodge and Savannah Camp at Loango

This two week all-inclusive safari package in Gabon is perfect for nature and animal lovers. Two weeks will give you plenty of opportunities to check off as many animals from your checklist. Our tour begins in Libreville, where we’ll stay at either Tropicana Hotel or Hotelière Sablière. We’ll then charter to Gamba and will then get to Nyanga River Lodge by boat and car, we’ll go on daily ventures spotting elephants, hippos, gorillas, chimpanzees, mandrills, birds and more.


During your safari we’ll cruise the wetlands for crocs and buffaloes; travel to Mayumba for humpback whales (July to September). We’ll also explore Loango Savannah Camp, incorporating coastal jungles, rivers, encounter habituated gorillas and chimpanzees at Yatouga and Ozouga, and go on beach safaris looking for animals like elephants and hippos roaming the beach. We’ll fly back through Libreville through Omboué or Port-Gentil.

Locally called "The Great Ape" Park, Moukalaba-Doudou has broad Gabonese woodlands, perfect for primate aficionados with peak concentrations of wild western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees, plus additional monkeys. You will be staying at Nyanga River Lodge, which is positioned between the Nyanga River and the Atlantic. During your stay you’ll also look for leatherback turtles (November - March), elephants and more. Enjoy fantastic meals at the lodge.

Bordering Moukalaba-Doudou, coastal Mayumba is perfect for sea lovers, thanks to its marine sanctuary, sheltering over 10% of southern humpback whales birthing between July and September. Enjoy the leaping spectacles and the sights of the rare humpback dolphins. 

Labeled "Africa’s Last Eden," Loango National Park is a seaside biodiversity haven in Gabon, integrating dense forests, pristine beaches, and meadows. We can spot forest elephants roaming on the shore, ocean-surfing hippos, lowland gorillas and more. At Loango Savannah Camp, you will join daily safaris, gorilla tracking, shore excursions and more. 


Itinerary 


Day 1: Arrival at Libreville 

Arrival at Leon Mba International Airport and transfer to your hotel (Hotelière Sablière or similar)

Day 2: Charter from Libreville to Gamba, transfer to Moukalaba-Doudou 

Morning scenic flight from Libreville to Gamba and then transfer by boat through the mangroves to Nyanga River Lodge, which is located on a peninsula between the Nyanga River and the Atlantic Ocean and is the first lodge in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park. Lunch and afternoon walking safari. Overnight at Nyanga Lodge. 

Day 3: Gorilla tracking and chimpanzee tracking at Moukalaba-Doudou 

Moukalaba-Doudou National Park has the highest density of wild western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees in Gabon. After a light breakfast we’ll go on safari on foot to look for gorillas. In the afternoon we’ll go on another walking safari in another part of the reserve to look for more primates such as chimpanzees. Overnight at Nyanga Lodge.

Day 4: Mayumba: turtle nesting and Moukalaba-Doudou safari 

The beaches between Nyanga River Lodge and Mayumba host nesting hawksbill turtles, leatherback turtles, green turtles at dawn and dusk. January to March is the hatching season. January is a rare overlap in which you can witness both nesting and hatching in one day. Very early morning visit on foot around 5 am and back at the lodge before 10 am. Afternoon safari around 3 pm and return to Nyanga Lodge. In the evening we’ll have a walk north along shorelines as the tide recedes, observing female turtles emerging from sea to nest. 

Day 5: Boat into the wetlands of Moukalaba-Doudou

Early morning departure to the north-east from Nyanga lodge towards savanna and wetlands where you’ll likely encounter hippos, all three crocodile species, forest elephants, incredible birdlife and chance of snorkeling elephants. Dinner under the stars at Nyanga Lodge. 

Day 6: Punu People Encounter at Moukalaba-Doudou 

The Punu people, a Bantu-speaking group, are known for deep natural world connection. Today is centrally focused on authentic local culture/traditions insight.

After breakfast, we’ll depart for a forest walk to discover local medicinal/edible plants together with the locals. You can taste fresh forest fruits, gather herbs/foods used in traditional lunch. At noon you will have a traditional lunch including fish, forest herbs/fruits/vegetables from the morning walk, bissap syrup and more.
In the afternoon we’ll visit a local village up river to learn more about daily life. Bonfire and dinner at Nyanga Lodge. 

Day 7: Safari at Moukalaba-Doudou

Early morning walking safari and night safari by boat, exploring smaller darker riverines, mangroves, open savannahs in search for hippos, civet cats, leopard, genet, owls, flying squirrels, loris and more. Return to Nyanga lodge for a light snack and nightcap before day end. 

Day 8: Flight from Gamba to Loango National Park 

Slow morning and big hearty breakfast before packing for the next destination: Loango National Park. Around 9 am we’ll depart Nyanga lodge via boat to Mayonami and drive to Gamba from where we’ll fly to Loango with low level flying giving fantastic views. From Iguela Airstrip we’ll drive to Loango Savannah Camp (20 min), on the edge of open savannah grassland and the Iguela Lagoon—serene, biodiverse waterway teeming with life, wildlife extremely prevalent in this food-rich location. Observe forest elephants and buffalos swimming just in front of your room or the restaurant deck. Afternoon boat trip to the Iguéla estuary, the meeting point between dark lagoon waters and ocean shaping Loango’s landscapes. Observation of multitude species: curious mudskippers to majestic African skimmer, a variety of monkeys like red-capped mangabeys and more. Overnight at Loango Savannah Camp. 

Day 9: Coastal Forest Walk And Mangroves at Loango National Park. 

After an early breakfast we’ll depart on foot for a walking safari into the coastal forest looking for gorillas and more. Birdwatching is excellent late dry to early rainy seasons. Enjoy stunning ocean/lagoon/river blend views with excellent fishing opportunities if you’d like to fish. environment.  In the afternoon we’ll go on a 4x4 safari looking for elephants in the Fromager area as well as major Nile crocodile nesting sites. Overnight at Savannah Camp at Loango. 

Day 10: Gorilla and chimpanzee tracking at Loango National Park

Departure by boat to Yatouga Gorilla Habituation Project (20min by boat) to track the western lowland gorillas group, followed by pick-nick and afternoon 4x4 safari deep into the forest to look for habituated chimpanzees. Back to the lodge for dinner. Overnight at Savannah Camp at Loango. 

Day 11: Savanna safari at Loango National Park 

4x4 safari at the Tassi area and forest walk. Great opportunity to encounter Africa’s most beautiful wild boar, the red river hog. Overnight at Savannah Camp, Loango. 

Day 12: Surfing Hippos & Galagos Programme  at Loango National Park 

In the morning we’ll go look for the surfing hippos at the beach during a walking safari, followed by breakfast and brunch at the lodge. Early dinner and cocktail on deck and boat trip at sunset to look for nocturnal species. Return to Savannah Camp around 9 pm and a light snack before sleeping. Overnight at Savannah Camp, Loango. 

Day 13: Rabi River & Afternoon Beach Safari at Loango National Park 

Morning boat safari on the Rabi River navigating the southern lagoon part, dedicated to observing numerous bird species who inhabit the area, such as the elusive Ogooué Miopithecus, Talapoin.Afternoon beach safari to encounter mammals who populate the coast that made Loango famous. Overnight at Loango Savannah Camp. 

Day 14: Flight to Libreville 

Either charter flight from Omboué or domestic flight from Port Gentil to Libreville. Transfer to your hotel and end of tour.

Important! Gabon's infrastructure is not as developed as in other countries and we still suffer from blackouts and sometimes water can get cut. Please, have realistic experiences, especially when going into the wild. Please, bring the necessary means to bring camping and traveling as comfortable as possible (torches, power banks, DEET, an extra towel and sheet, baby wipes, water, snacks, etc) 



Important! Scheduled charters between Gamba and Libreville are only on Thursdays. Private charters have to be arranged well in advance!


- Libreville: The Radisson Hotel, Tropicana and Hotel La Sablière are excellent hotels, though still not at the same level of a hotel in Europe/US.
- The luxury camp at Loango Savannah Camp is designed to have a comfortable glamping experience in the wild with comfortable beds, solar energy and more. Please, be aware that you are in the wild, so there will always be insects and small critters. The camps do their best to have the tents spotless and mosquito-free, but take measures. 

- Always be aware that flights can get cancelled and delayed, it's good to have buffer days. 

- Leatherback turtles can be seen during a nocturnal visit from November until late February at the Nyanga Camp in Moukalaba-Doudou and can also be seen at Pongara National Park if you would like to add this to your booking.
- Humpback whale watching is possible from June until September. 

- Consult your doctor for malaria meds and other diseases. Make sure to protect yourself against mosquitoes (long pants, closed shoes with socks, DEET, etc). 

- Make sure to have your yellow fever vaccination card on you on arrival, as well as your visa, invitation letter, hotel bookings and flight tickets.

- The Gabon e-visa system has not been working. We offer assistance for this at 120 euro per person to get the e-visa for longer tours. For tours of only two nights or shorter, we charge 230 euro per person.
- Luggage allowance: if you will be hiking from Loango to Sounga, we do not recommend more than 10 kg/person. If you’re going to Loango / Moukalaba-Doudou by plane, a maximum of 20 kg is permitted per person and subject to payload.
- Credit card: it is possible to use your credit card in Libreville, but at the parks, everything is handled by cash.
- Tips: tips are not expected but always welcome. We recommend 15 euro per person per day and 15 euro for all general staff per person per day.
- Reservation: your booking is confirmed with a 30 percent deposit. For bookings at Loango National Park and Moukalaba-Doudou Nyanga Lodge we require a 50 percent non-refundable deposit and signed waiver and booking terms.  In some cases, third party supplier terms and conditions may require a higher deposit,

particularly during peak periods; in this case, we will inform you accordingly.
- The outstanding balance must be paid 60 days before the trip for general tours and for tours to Loango National Park and Nyanga Lodge at Moukalaba-Doudou 90 days before the trip commences. All payments are to be done by bank transfer to our US Bank Account. We do not accept credit cards or WUM. 

- Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and must be taken out at the time of booking confirmation. Coverage should include trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical and related expenses, lost baggage, liability and travel delays. If you plan to participate in a dangerous or high-risk activity, please inform your insurer as additional coverage may be required. Our company cannot be held responsible for any loss incurred due to cancellation, regardless of the circumstance.

- Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the return date of your trip and contain at least three blank pages for visas, excluding validation pages.

- Children under the age of 12 years are, regretfully, not allowed.

- Rates shown are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances such as increased government taxes and levies.
